Sintra has one of the highest qualities of life in both Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula, one of the many reasons why it is home to one of the largest foreign communities in Portugal.
Located in the district of Lisbon, the Portuguese town of Sintra is considered one of the most privileged places in the country for tourism and leisure. It has exceptional conditions of geographic location and environmental qualities that have made its settlement possible since ancient times.
The town includes, within its territory, the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, recognized in 1995 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique category, created specifically for this mixture of natural landscape and cultural heritage, covers part of the Serra de Sintra, including the town’s historic center and its monuments.
All of this is harmoniously surrounded by the local vegetation, constituting an extraordinary natural and architectural complex without precedent. Exuberant vegetation, interspersed with imposing monuments and romantic gardens, invites us to go back in time and discover a thousand and one shades of green.
The nature and mysticism that invade Sintra are due to Romanticism, the European cultural movement that, from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century, left its mark on architecture and the landscape. Walking makes it possible to observe some of the life that is hidden in the Sintra Mountains and in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which is home to more than 200 species of vertebrates and 1000 different plants.
Between two rocky peaks, Ponta Alta and Ponta do Abano, is Guincho beach. The fact that it is in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, very close to the mountains, gives it a unique touch: the wind that is felt there almost all year round makes this beach perfect for extreme sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. That is why Guincho beach is in the final of the national contest “Sete Maravilhas, Praias de Portugal”, in the category “Beach for sports use”.
Guincho is frequently the stage of European and world events in the area of wind related sports, being one of the most sought after destinations by the best athletes. However, Guincho is not only about beach, waves, sand and wind.
The almost nine kilometers that connect the Marina de Cascais to Guincho can be covered by bike, through a bike path where the background is painted by a mixture of green and sea. Those who decide to cycle along Cascais’ oldest bicycle path will pass by some points of interest not to be missed, such as Boca do Inferno the Guia lighthouse and Forte S. Jorge de Oitavos.
